dc.description.abstract | This qualitative research thesis explores issues of mothering, identity and connectedness in personal recovery from mental illness. The findings emerged from data gathered during in-depth interviews conducted with 17 women who were mothers with mental illness, living in rural locations across Victoria and South Australia. Personal recovery may involve a process of managing distress, making a change and finally feeling better, however persisting through challenges and hardships may be a more pertinent description for mothers with limited personal and financial resources. Robust connectedness to self, family and service providers is vital, and through healthy relationships, women may be supported to develop a more positive and multi-dimensional sense of self. | - |
