Abstract: | The World Health Organization (WHO)’s 2014 report on global surveillance of antimicrobial resistance reveals that antibiotic resistance is no longer a prediction for the future; it is happening now, across the world. This has been driven by antibiotic overuse in humans and food-producing animals, globalisation, and suboptimal infection control. Underuse and misuse of medicines also contribute to the problem, and sub-therapeutic doses of antibiotics used in animal-rearing can result in resistant microorganisms, which can spread to humans. |
