Description: This is a portrait of Nurse Mona M. Wilton R.N, R.M., INF. WELFARE, A.A.N.S. (8th DIVISION). Trained in nursing on-site at the Warrnambool and District Base Hospital from 1934 to 1937. Miss Wilton joined the A.A.N.S. (Australian Army Nursing Service) during the early years of World War II and served in Australia and Singapore. In service of her country, Miss Wilton lost her life by enemy action as the wounded and accompanying nursing staff were being evacuated from Singapore in the yacht 'Vyner Brook' in February, 1942. A memorial window was unveiled in Villiers Block on 28th March, 1953 by Mrs A. Young (nee Wilma Oram) representing the Past trainees' Association, Warrnambool and District Base Hospital. Mrs Young was on duty with Miss Wilton during the evacuation and subsequently was taken prisoner for the remainder of the war. 'We proudly remember her' - written March 1989
