Description: This is a portrait of Nurse Wilma Elizabeth Forster Young (Oram) R.N, R.M., INF. WELFARE, A.A.N.S. (2/13th Australian General Hospital). Wilma trained in nursing on-site at the Warrnambool and District Base Hospital from 1935 to 1938. Wilma joined the A.A.N.S. (Australian Army Nursing Service) in 1939 at the beginning of World War II after France fell and served in Australia and Singapore. In service of her country, Wilma was aboard the 'SS Vyner Brook' with fellow nurse Mona Wilton in February, 1942 to which she survived the sinking and was captured on a nearby island with many others and subsequently was taken prisoner for the remainder of the war. A memorial window was unveiled in Villiers Block on 28th March, 1953 by Mrs A. Young (nee Wilma Oram) representing the Past trainees' Association, Warrnambool and District Base Hospital.
