Description: | This picture shows Nurses engaging in the 1986 Nurses strike, marching past the Warrnambool Base Hospital. The 1986/87 Hospital Annual Report reads, "Industrial Unrest: Industrial unrest in the field of nursing was evident again in 1986/87, culminating in the fifty day nurses strike in the last months of 1986. During this time elective admissions were seriously curtailed, however all emergency admissions proceeded as did the urgent elective cases. Whilst the workload and throughput of the hospital during the fifty (50) days of the dispute was seriously reduced, harmonious relationships amongst the various groups within the hospital were maintained. The industrial action concluded before Christmas and a new grading structure for nurses was agreed on the 23rd January, 1987. During the period of action the hospital waiting list did build up substantially, but I am now happy to report that this has been cleared and we are now functioning as normal." Mr F. Lodge, President of Warrnambool & District Base Hospital. Meg Stuchbery in skirt & jacket and 3rd from right, Lorraine Blake.
